Simlipal Tiger Reserve hides the world's only black tigers. The stripe pattern breaks across the flank in thick black bands, merging and doubling until the orange is almost an undertone, and for a moment the animal looking back at you from the sal forest does not match any tiger you have seen in any photograph anywhere. Pseudo-melanism, the geneticists call it: a single-gene mutation fixed in one small, isolated population. You are standing in it, sixty vehicles a day at most, most days far fewer, four hundred kilometres from the nearest city anyone visits on purpose.
It does not compete with Tadoba. It barely competes with obscurity. That is its whole strange power.
The only black tigers
The science first, because it is genuinely singular. A 2021 genetic study traced Simlipal's dark cats to a mutation in the Taqpep gene, carried at high frequency because the population stayed small and isolated for generations. These are not a separate species or a trick of light. They are Bengal tigers wearing the forest's own shadow pattern, found nowhere else on the planet in the wild.
The last national count put sixteen tigers in the reserve. Treat that figure the way this series treats all figures: the reserve speaks of more, the terrain argues for caution, and the direction matters more than the digit. What is not in dispute is the other half of the equation. Simlipal is among the largest tiger reserves in India, a sprawling Mayurbhanj plateau of sal forest, grassland and waterfalls, and sixteen cats in that much country means what it sounds like. This is a pilgrimage with a lottery ticket attached, not a safari with odds.
The forest around the cats
Which is why the honest Simlipal piece spends most of its words elsewhere. Barehipani plunging nearly four hundred metres in two tiers, Joranda dropping a hundred and fifty in a single silver thread. Elephants in real numbers. Giant squirrels, pangolins, mugger crocodiles. The Mayurbhanj maharajas' old hunting ground, declared a sanctuary in the first Project Tiger wave and a biosphere reserve since 2009, elevated to national park status in April 2025. Forty thousand visitors a year in a good year: Tadoba does that kind of footfall before lunch in May.
The tourism model matches the forest. No zones in the central Indian sense, no permit wars, no tatkal. Sixty vehicles a day across two gates, Jashipur and Pithabata, many days well under the cap. Private vehicles with clearance drive designated routes. Guides mandatory, exit by sunset, waterfalls before four. It is the least commercialised major tiger reserve in the country, which reads as either a scandal or a sanctuary depending on what you came for.
Getting there is a filter
Fly to Bhubaneswar, drive five to six hours north to Baripada, and keep going. Kolkata answers from the other side at similar distance. The journey filters the visitors down to the determined, the Odia diaspora, and the tiger completists chasing the black cats. Against Tadoba it is a different state, a different airport, a different holiday. From Limban: plan separately, and only if the black tigers have genuinely got under your skin.
When to go
November to mid-June, winter for the forest at its most walkable, summer for cats at water. The monsoon closes it the way monsoons close the east: completely.
So which one
Simlipal for the pilgrimage no other park can offer: black tigers existing nowhere else, waterfalls, empty sal forest, the feeling of going where the circuit has not arrived and may never fully arrive.
