HISTORICAL OUTLOOK

May is historical Tadoba at its most extreme: the heat is at its highest, the water at its lowest. That is precisely when the tiger is easiest to find.

The monsoon breaks in June and changes everything. Rain pulls the temperature down, fills the lakes, and sends the animals deeper into the canopy. Tadoba becomes lush and harder to read.

By November, the water has settled, the heat has eased, and the reserve opens again — cooler, quieter, and sharply focused around what remains.

Yes - and nights are the real story.

Average temperatures have already climbed 1°C over the past 25 years, but the next 25 are projected to bring a further 1.7°C onto daytime highs and a steeper 3.2°C onto nighttime lows, pushing the annual range from roughly 21–33°C today to 24.5–35°C by 2050.

That's not a uniform warming; the gap between day and night is closing, with nights heating up nearly twice as fast as days. For a forest that relies on cool nights to let wildlife and vegetation recover from daytime heat, a shrinking day-night differential matters more than the headline highs — it changes how much relief the reserve gets after each hot afternoon, not just how hot the afternoons themselves become.

Yes — and the year is changing shape, not just temperature.

The most striking shift is the expansion of extreme heat: historically, only May pushed near 40°C, but by 2050, April has joined it and May has blown past it, turning a one-month peak into a sustained crucible.

At the other end of the year, the cool season is being squeezed from both sides, with overnight lows in November, January, and February all lifting noticeably off the historical floor.

The only anchor left is the monsoon: from July to September, the temperature range barely twitches across the decades, acting as a hard reset before the heat starts building faster on the other side.

Data Provenance & Methodology

Historical values are aggregated from 25 years of daily ECMWF ERA5-Land reanalysis observations for the Tadoba coordinate (2000–2025).

Future projections are synthesised from seven high-resolution CMIP6/HighResMIP climate physics models. Each displayed value represents the multi-model median for its period; raw responses preserve individual model outputs and parameters.
